The Key to Looking Great in a Tshirt Dress?
Updated: Aug 3, 2018

Its no secret that I wear many, many, many cheap dresses. I don't like to spend a whole lot of money when I shop, so lots of times, my go-to is a cotton or rayon dress. I am asked often how I am able to get them to fall so nicely. The answer to this question is the key to looking great in a cotton shift or tshirt dress (or almost any dress actually). What is it?
A SLIP.
Yeah yeah yeah. Call me a grandma-- I don't care! Proper underwear makes any outfit look a million times better. The slip seems to have fallen by the wayside lately, and every time I mention one, I seem to be laughed at, but let me tell you something-- that is what makes a dress fall BEAUTIFULLY. I may sound like I am straight out of 1950 or something, but oh well! I can't even believe more women my age don't wear them- it is an ESSENTIAL item for me!
1. What KIND of slip?
I own about eight different slips, differing in length and color, but my absolute favorite ones are SHORTS, like the ones pictured. I wear these all the time! My mother always called these tap pants (look, I don't know!) but the slip short is my absolute go-to. They don't bunch, they are short so you can wear them under minis, and your legs won't rub together! Mine are black because I get the most use out of those, but I've been meaning to get a tan one.
There are other types of slip shorts too- tighter compression ones that are Spanx-esque, but I always find that these either lose their sliding capability after a few washes OR are visible under the clothes, especially at the waistband or the leg band. I do have quite a few pairs of these, but they just won't last you as long as a regular slip will.
You do NOT have to spend a lot of money on these either! There is a huge section of slips at Target and/or Walmart. You might have seen in the picture of the slip shorts above that these are UNDER $10! Dillard's also has one of my favorite undergarment sections and they have tons of options!
A regular slip skirt will work JUST AS WELL as the shorts and can be a better option for some people. It is also much easier to find in stores. No matter what you get, just GET ONE! I have seen WAY too many dresses sticking to booties or panties lately...
2. When do I NOT wear a slip?

The only time I don't wear a slip with a dress is when the dress is lined with good, expensive lining. Because, for the most part, I'm a pretty cheap shopper, when I am wearing a dress, I am almost always wearing a slip or slip underwear just because it helps the fabric fall nicely around my behind!
The dress I have on above is $9.90 from Forever 21. If I wore this dress without a slip, it would either attach itself to my underwear, attach itself to my behind, or go into my behind. Gross, gross, gross. Wear a slip. It falls so much nicer when I have one on and then I don't have to worry too much about the wind, because I have a pair of shorts on under!
3. Should I get a full slip?
No girl- pass on that. You just need a half slip and 18 inches at the LONGEST. I have a longer slip for when I wear maxis and that is the only use I have ever gotten out of it.
